but I can't even touch my toes!

This is something I hear more often than not when I tell people I teach yoga, or encourage them to try a class. There seems to be a stigma attached to practicing yoga that is only available to a limited group of people that can touch their toes! This cannot be further from the truth. While an increase in flexibility is an added benefit that one will see after some time, it is surely not the only one! From the start of any yoga class, there is a concentrated focus on the breath. Bringing attention to it and being mindful of the depth of it. This act alone quiets the mind and provides a sense of peace and calm. Depending on the style of yoga you are practicing, there is always an underlining focus and attention to the breath. Whether you are involved in a more dynamic intense style of yoga such as Ashtanga or Vinyasa, or a slower paced style such as Hatha or Yin each has it's own list of benefits. Some range from increased strength, toning and conditioning while others concentrate on elongated and stretching the muscles. All are equally rich in what it will give back to you. So whatever it is you are seeking in your life today, by allowing yourself 1 hour on the mat is guaranteed to re-connect your mind to body and body to soul. And this is always a good thing!
